\r\nAF 305 Fisheries Resource Management and Conservation 3 Units:

At the end of the course the student should be able to:\r\n
\r\n
\r\n Define a fish stock and estimate fish population abundance and forecast on future trends of a fishery.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n Discuss rationale for fisheries management; and apply methods and techniques in regulating fisheries activities.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\nSynopsis:\r\n
\r\n
\r\nDefinition. Rationale for management and conservation. Population growth rates, Extinction risks, synthesis of technical, bioeconomic and social factors which influence the formulation and implementation of fisheries management strategies. Ecosystem based management, Endangered species classification. Sustainable harvesting and conservational techniques for regulating fisheries \r\n
activities: Licensing, gear regulation, closed season, closed area. Fish movement regulations and protected areas. Marine reserves, Non-conventional methods:\r\ncultural norms and values. Fisheries management Institutions and legislations in Tanzania. Case histories of successful and unsuccessful fishery management systems.\r\n

\r\n\r\nDelivery: 30 lecture hours and 45 hours of practicals. \r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\nAssessment: Essays and tests 15%; mid-semester examination 25%; and final examination 60%. \r\n
