\r\n \r\nObjectives:
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
\r\n Identify fish feed requirements
.\r\n Formulate and produce feeds.\r\n

\r\n(i) Food and feeding: Concepts of feeding. Types of feeds (natural and artificial feeds). Digestion and absorption. Nutritional requirements: proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, and minerals. Metabolism. Conversion rates. Nutrient deficiencies.
\r\n(ii) Feed formulation and techniques: Feed formulation. Feed analysis. Manufacturing techniques for different types of feeds: dry, wet, semi-moist, frozen, extruded, pelleted and microencapsulated.
\r\n(iii) Preservation and storage: Feed preservation, transportation and storage. Feeding regimes.\r\n

\r\nDelivery: 30 lecture hours and 45 hours of practicals. \r\n\r\nAssessment:
Essays and tests 15%; mid-semester examination 25%; and final examination 60%.

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
\r\n Define extension education and state its importance to participatory fisheries extension programmes.
\r\n Describe the communication process and its application to fisheries.
\r\n State and apply common extension teaching methods.
\r\n Design, produce and use communication media appropriately.

\r\n(i) Philosophy and functions of aquaculture extension: Definition, Need, scope, objectives and principles of fisheries and aquaculture extension education. Aquaculture extension services in national development.
\r\n(ii) Extension and the aquaculture technology transfer systems: diffusion and management of innovations. Identification of target individual/group, opinion leaders and public sensitization. Problem identification and strategy formulation
\r\n(iii) Teaching learning process in aquaculture extension: Definition, Selection and use of fisheries extension teaching methods. Discussions, demonstrations, visits, talks, meeting and conferences. Design, production/selection, use and evaluation of the communications media used in fisheries extension. Objects, still and motion picture, audio, video, television and printed material.
\r\n(iv) Role of women, government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community based organizations (CBOs) in fisheries and aquaculture extension.

To introduce students to literature survey for current trends and issues at the cutting edge of aquatic environment and conservation. \r\n

An in-depth literature survey of contemporary studies in Aquatic environmental conservation and biology leading to preparation and presentation of a seminar paper. Topics may include causes and consequences of loss of biological diversity; climate change and loss of biological diversity; biological diversity evaluation, monitoring and conservation of biological diversity; restoration ecology; water and costal areas use conflicts, politics and biological diversity.\r\n
